The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Engineer to join our Structures Management team in our Raleigh headquarters. In this role you will Design standard- to moderately-complex highway structure. Assist senior engineers on more complex highway-related structure design rehabilitation preservation or critical repair projects. Prepare plans for Preservation Rehabilitation and Repair (PRR) and Emergency repairs for existing structures. Review and evaluate engineered repairs performed by NCDOT teams in response to Priority Maintenance Critical Finds identified in inspection reports. Review inspection reports and evaluate the structural condition of moderately complex bridges culverts and pipes in determining safe load carrying capacities of all structural members and connections. Analyze and evaluate division maintenance proposals bridge structure upgrades to improve load ratings. Perform layout and design of bridges culverts and other structures in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and Structures Management Design Manual policies and procedures. Coordinate field technical support for field personnel and other units on bridge repair rehabilitation issues and preservation activities. Review municipal bridge plans and structure encroachments for structures that will be added to the state system. Interact and communicate with the Structures Management team and externally with NCDOT Divisions the Roadway Design Unit Geotechnical Engineering Unit and the Hydraulics Unit to acquire clarification and ensure consistency. Communicate with NCDOT staff and other stakeholders to determine project priorities assist in recommending solutions and resolving issues. Attend conferences classes on new code changes or computer applications. What You BringExperience preparing designs and detailed plans for construction repair preservation and rehabilitation of highway structures. Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and practices related to bridge repair preservation rehabilitation and replacement projects. Experience in analysis and load rating of structures on the state highway system to determine safe load carrying capacity. Computer skills in engineering applications including STAAD GEOPAK RCPIER Merlin Dash and MicroStation. Experience resolving construction problems and responding to requests for information. Experience reviewing highway structure inspection reports and evaluating repairs performed in response to priority maintenance critical finds identified in an inspection report. Experience coordinating and communicating with NCDOT teams to provide accurate and constructible structure plans on schedule. Ability to identify and conduct resource planning. Negotiation skills and ability to approve designs program project specifications of others to meet desired compliance with engineering principles standards statues codes regulations and design needs. Ability to prioritize programs projects. Communication skills to explain and write related facts addressing engineering concepts practices and regulations in a clear concise and organized manner. NoteWe may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
