Why Are There So Many Churches Part IV AD 588 John the Faster of Constantinople assumed the title of Universal Bishop. AD 606 Boniface III was declared to be the Universal Bishop and the Roman Catholic Church comes into existence. The first denomination can now be identified Jesus said in Matthew 23 8 But you are not to be called rabbi for you have one teacher and you are all brothers. AD 1054 The Pope in Rome sent messengers to the Bishop of Constantinople with charges of heresy against him. When he avoided them they excommunicated him and all those who opposed the Pope in Rome. This brought about the establishment of the Orthodox Church. The Patriarchs of Alexandria Antioch and Jerusalem aligned themselves with Constantinople.
