Black indonesian ayam cemani chickens

If ?exotic? and ?exceedingly rare? describes the chicken you are looking to add to your flock, then the Ayam Cemani is for you! Originating in Indonesia, the Ayam Cemani is considered sacred in its homeland, used for centuries in religious rituals. Imported relatively recently to the United States, this breed is extremely limited in numbers and can be a challenge to acquire. What makes the Ayam Cemani so unique? Dubbed ?the Lamborghini? of the chicken world, this breed is ?black to the bone?! Their beak, tongue, comb, wattles, skin, and even their meat, organs, and yes ? their bones ? are black! The birds? black color occurs because of excess pigmentation of the tissues, caused by a genetic condition known as fibromelanosis. Their gorgeous ink-black feathers shimmer in the sun, glinting with an iridescent beetle green and purple sheen Luckily for rare-breed enthusiasts, a Dutch breeder named Jan Steverink first imported the Ayam Cemani out of Indonesia to Europe in 1998. Currently, this breed also resides in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and now the United States. Not a large breed, the roosters weigh an average of 5 to 6 pounds, and the hens average 4 to 5 pounds. You can expect the hens to lay 120 to 140 cream-colored (not black!) medium to large eggs a year. Ayam Cemanis are a hardy breed, easy to handle and low maintenance. Because of their black color, they easily absorb the sunlight, which helps them in cold, harsh climates. If you are looking to add this bird to your breeding project, make sure you have an understanding of the fibromelanosis gene. We only use the blackest birds possible in our breeding pens, but we cannot guarantee the distribution of black pigment in their offspring. In the past, individual birds in the United States sold for $2500, leaving them out of reach for most backyard enthusiasts. At Suzy Poultry, we are proud to offer quality Ayam Cemani at a much more affordable price
