The definition of backbiting is talking maliciously about someone who is not present. To backbite is to gossip about someone behind his or her back. Secret slander is the essence of backbiting and it is strongly condemned in the Bible. I m guilty of this but I do my best not to do it anymore today. It is something that can be forgiven if one asks to be forgiven (repents). Psalm 101 5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour him will I cut off him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. Privily a cover (in a good or a bad a literal or a figurative sense) backbiting covering covert disguise(-th) hiding place privily protection secret(-ly place). Slandereth to wag the tongue i.e. to calumniate accuse slander. Proverbs 25 23 The north wind driveth away rain so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue. Proverbs 16 28 A froward man soweth strife and a whisperer separateth chief friends. (A whisperer and a backbiter are virtually the same thing). Romans 1 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to a reprobate mind to do those things which are not convenient Romans 1 29...Romans 1 30 Backbiters haters of God despiteful proud boasters inventors of evil things disobedient to parents (etc. etc.). I can remember my Grandmother telling me the following if you can t say something good about someone it is better not to say anything at all. I believe she was telling me this in reference to the above verses and definitions. If you want to anger God go ahead gossip about someone behind their back spread rumors about them your choice. I ve heard it said When a gossiper gossips about one person that means they re giving someone else a break There are many out there that do not like this topic. This topic seems to touch a sore spot. Oh well Many could benefit from listening to and learning the truth from God s word. Will they listen and learn Some will some will not. Their choice.
