Austin - Male Labrador Retriever

Austin 2.5 year old neutered male yellow lab 88 lbs My name is Austin and I was found wandering the streets of San Jose looking for love (or maybe barbecue). My rambling ways landed me smack dab in the pokey and I was facing some serious hard time until these cowgirls from Lab Rescue came and busted me out. They saw that underneath all my youthful energy and exuberance was a good ol dog with a big heart who just needed to be shown the ropes and learn how to settle. What Austin s rescue rep says Austin is a really good looking very sweet happy and enthusiastic boy with a lot of energy. Judging from his teeth his demeanor and his energy level he s about 2 or 3 years old which is still a puppy in Lab years. He is very strong and leaps like a gazelle into the air. He needs some socialization and training to become the great dog that we think he can be. He gets very excited when he sees another dog jumping and barking but not hackling or showing aggressive behavior. A new owner will need to work on this with him. He will most likely not be a dog park dog and will probably do best as the only dog in the home or with a non-reactive mature dog who can guide him along. Austin does well being handled and readily gives up his food and toys to people. Austin s ideal family will be one that is experienced working with and training young active large dogs especially Labs. The right adopter will be able to handle him physically get him plenty of exercise and will need to provide strong and consistent leadership to help Austin be a responsive and well-behaved family member. Because of his size and energy level Austin should go to a home with older children (teenagers would be best). His adopter will need to commit to taking Austin to training or working with a trainer. We think Austin just hasn t gotten the kind of attention and leadership that he needed in his previous home so he has some catching up to do. He can get very excited but given exercise to burn energy and calm leadership he settles in nicely. He is food motivated and eager to please so we think he will respond very well to training. Austin has been recently neutered brought up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. Austin is located in San Carlos. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in.
