If we could make a wish for macaws to find a home it s not easy to select and praise one bird over any other because so many macaws will benefit by a home. We have two sister 15 year old Severe macaws named Tinker and Tyler that came to TGF when they were under one year old from the breeder pet store along with 11 other young birds. They were bred in CO and the original breeder is still producing birds. Tinker and Tyler have had only one home for 10 years in their lives besides TGF. They ve always been together and they do need to be adopted together. Their adopter lived in TX and she drove to CO to adopt and pick them up and take them back to TX. For most of the decade they were in TX their adopter and her mother took wonderful care of them. We don t know what happened but the mother contacted us because her daughter could no longer provide for the birds and neither could the mom. It took over 6 months for us to get a volunteer to bring them to us. One of our long time volunteers who lives in TX picked them up and drove them to CO. The girls are full of personality and they share a cage. They like to mumble play peekaboo hang out watch the other birds are not other-bird aggressive and enjoy watching activity going on around them. One of the girls Tinker was severely feather picked when she returned and her sister is fully feathered. Tyler has regrown some of her plumage and it s very possible that more feathers will grow because not all of the feather follicles are damaged. She obviously has some bare areas on her body. This has nothing to do with her overall health personality appetite or behavior. If one could say that birds have a sense of humor (and back it up with behavioral examples) that would be these two sisters. They like to open the cage s upper feeder doors and go in and out of them. They are good about stepping up and most likely could be worked with to train to wear a harness as long as nothing is forced on them. They like pretty much ANY food so using treats is a wonderful reinforcer for them. And if you are able to make an outdoor aviary so that they can be outside some of the time in good weather they are used to that as their former home had a large enclosed front patio where the girls spent much of their time.
