Monte - Female Macaw

Before Monte was adopted and before feather damaging behavior began she lived with another macaw. The owners have speculated that separation from this bird and placement in a single-bird household contributed to the development of her behavioral problems. It is possible that she will ultimately do best in a multiple bird environment or aviary setting but we feel there remains great potential for adoption as a pet companion. Monte has been consistently engaging in displacement behaviors namely chewing of cardboard boxes (her favorite) shredding paper and chewing toys composed of similar materials (we have not observed much wood chewing yet). She has also learned some basic foraging skills including finding pellets wrapped in paper packets sorting through her pellet dish to find peanut fragments and opening drawers on foraging puzzle toys to retrieve peanut pieces and pellets. She has been making excellent progress with target training (using a clicker as a bridge) with pieces of peanut sunflower seeds and scrambled egg used for positive reinforcement. Monte will step up out of the cage to a toweled hand arm and once out of the cage will step to the bare forearm all for peanut reinforcers. We know that Monte had lovely feathers less than 4 years ago and we re hopeful that with more opportunity to interact with people events and birds while following her medical care guidelines that she ll let her feathers regrow.
