When sweet-but-scared young mother-dog Dahlia found herself in a cold cramped isolated kennel at one of the highest kill shelters in the area she didn t know what to think. All she knew was she would do anything to keep her two remaining puppies -- two-day old sisters Ivy and Lily -- safe from anyone who attempted to harm them. Days went by and Dahlia watched as her babies were manhandled and examined by sterile gloved hands whimpering as their soft cries echoed across the room while she watched and waited helpless in the cage. Meanwhile a group of shelter volunteers were attempting to network her intake photo with wildfire-like speed. Dahlia had been mislabeled as a Staffordshire Terrier by the shelter staff which meant the law stated she would not be available to the public until she underwent a mandatory Temper Test. Being in a shelter is stressful enough for any dog but for an uncertain mother determined to defend her puppies Who knows how she would have reacted to the cold pokes prods and pushes of the evaluators. The only way Dahlia and her daughters could make it out alive was if a certified rescue stepped in and they were running out of time for a miracle. As luck would have it New Leash On Life happened upon her case. One look at Dahlia s desperate forlorn face and they knew they had to intervene. A few phone calls later the Rescue Team was on their way. Upon being rescued Dahlia watched with grateful eyes and a gently thumping tail as each of her daughters was carefully nestled next to her and they were soon delivered from harm safe sound and -- above all -- together settled in a whelping box set up especially for them in the New Arrivals kennel at New Leash On Life s Ranch. From then on Dahlia could finally rest easy. Though she was still watchful of her pups she knew that the Staff at New Leash meant them no harm and instead of whimpering as she had done at the shelter would rest her head on the corner of the whelping box as she observed the Staff weighing socializing and helping to clean her babies. Days turned to weeks weeks to months and Dahlia s puppies continued to grow up healthy and strong a chance they might not have gotten in the shelter. These days Dahlia s puppies have begun the process of being weaned onto solid food and she is now showing an eagerness to get out and experience the joys of life that she may have missed out on in her frantic sudden motherhood. Like most mother dogs Dahlia is extremely tolerant and would probably do quite well in a household with children or other dogs. She is very playful gentle and kind and she enjoys frequent belly rubs and leg massages. Though Dahlia won t be available to take home until her puppies are old enough to be separated from her when they turn three months old in June 2016 we are starting to take applications for this wonderful girl so she too can find the wonderful loving home she has always deserved ...
