Humphrey - Male PekingesePug

This darling little chunk is named Humphrey. He is believed to be a Pug Pekingese mix and is 9-10 years old. He is laid back friendly to all animals and loving to his humans. Sadly that wasn t enough for his former family who dumped him in the shelter because he had accidents in the home. Apparently he was not exercised or let out very often because he was a whopping 6 pounds over weight. This is an enormous amount of weight for a small dog. It was also apparent that he had not been to the vet in a very long time. In addition to having to update all his vaccines he was in desperate need of a dental and also needed to be neutered. He was in pain from his teeth and had to have two abscessed teeth removed. He is finally recovered and doing quite well in his foster home. Humphrey gets along with all dogs and cats....in fact his best friend in his foster home is one of the resident cats....who greeted him when he first arrived by rubbing all over him.....and Humphrey being the gentleman that he is just stood there. He likes to pile on the couch with his foster Mom and the rest of the gang to watch movies and get hugs and kisses. He is currently fostered with a few cats Pugs and Pug mixes. He has had no issues with anyone but hasn t really tried to engage anyone to play...but he is happy to snuggle down for a nap with anyone. While he is a laid back fellow don t think he lacks anything in the personality department. He is very expressive and wags his tail often. He is always happy to see his foster mom and loves to ride in the car He has not shown much interest in toys but is curious. We believe he did not have any toys in his former life but he is learning all about these wonderful things in his foster home. He is very focused on being with his people at all times.Due to his obesity it was difficult for Humphrey to even walk and his back legs were very weak....again because he was allowed to be gain weight and obviously did not get adequate exercise. It was even difficult for him to comfortably go to the bathroom. As his weight begins to come off his legs are getting stronger but we do not believe he will regain all the strength in them that he once had. For that reason Humphrey cannot be placed in a home where there are stairs unless his family is willing to carry him up and down them. He enjoys short walks right now and we hope that he will eventually be able to enjoy longer ones but for now he just has to work on loosing weight and building the muscles back up in his legs. Ideally his perfect home would be one where he can walk out a door(with no steps down) directly to a fenced backyard. This will give him the opportunity to walk and play while being supervised by his new family person. Currently he enjoys strolling in his foster s backyard.Humphrey is working on his house manners and has alerted his foster Mom that he needs to go out....he does this by getting in front of her and starring at her...no barking just a steady stare in her direction. He is not always reliable and has accidents but they are happening less often than when he first arrived in rescue. He will use a potty pad but we are trying to completely house train him. We believe once his strength is built up he will be able to hold it a bit longer and his accidents will be a thing of the past.......there is no way to tell for sure but he has shown us that he prefers to take care of business outside but isn t 100% yet.MMR is seeking a forever home for Humphrey where someone can be home more often than night. He needs a loving patient kind person or family who will continue to work on his weight loss and strengthening of his back legs. He will need a refresher on house manners and an understanding and patient person is needed to help him master this with the understanding that he may not be able to give his person very much notice that he needs to go . Humphrey would be happy with other similar sized canine friends or he would love to be the center of his new person s world. We are requiring a fenced yard as he may not ever want to take long walks for potty breaks and needs the freedom that a fenced yard will offer. He must always be supervised while outside. Most importantly he needs the constant love and acceptance he did not receive in his former life.If you are looking for a laid back gent to share your life Humphrey may be your guy.
