This long lived Orange-winged Amazon doesn t need words to express himself he has found his posturing and body language can offer just as much communication as speech. Though he appears to be a tough one to get to know Rocky has a wonderful parrot personality with a vigilant eye. The Orange-winged Amazon parrot is native to South America specifically the entire northern part east of the Andes Mountains. In captivity the Orange-wing is often thought of as having an unpleasant voice but their plumage is truly gorgeous. When their tail feathers are spread a melange of oranges yellows and greens with every shade in between can be seen. This can be truly awe inspiring in contrast to the green feathers that dominates the majority of their contour feathers.In his last home in MN Rocky s best friend was his Quaker buddy Louie. Since Louie passed away Rocky hasn t found a special bird buddy although he is social with many of the other Amazons. Though you may not hear Rocky due to his preference for quiet he will certainly let you know what is on his mind. While spending time in his outdoor aviary at The Gabriel Foundation you can often see Rocky flying from perch to perch. At almost 40 years old Rocky has mastered control of the air with his wings when time to come inside in the evening he even prefers to navigate the obstacle course of doors leading from the aviary to his cage. To offer this wonderful aged Orange-winged Amazon the life he deserves space to fly is certainly necessary. As a wild-caught parrot Rocky s interaction with people wasn t always based on mutual trust and respect. In the old days before importation became illegal birds like Rocky were called broncos .
