Hannigan came to TGF along with 20 other species of parrots when their owner died. When she and her husband originally had a bird breeding business in So. Cal. in the late 80 s she hand raised most of their babies. At that time CA was at the forefront of captive breeding and unweaned babies were selling like hotcakes because people were told that this would make the baby bond to them. A generation later we know this not to be true it s environment a relationship built on trust training and reinforcement is what encourages the parrot human bond. In those early days it was common to use punishment or aversive training methods to make sure birds learned to obey our commands. Today we cringe with we have learned a better way to work with birds and that our goal should be the most positive least intrusive type of teaching and training. This means that he is handled by several different people during his normal day. When he is at an outreach event he is carefully supervised and we offer him the opportunity to interact with adults and children who follow our guidelines for safety.
