Beautiful Taylor (a Syrian aka Teddy Bear hamster) was purchased at a local pet store but then her guardian couldn t keep her for several reasons. Typical of hamsters she is very cranky when woken up during the day. She is a bit shy and tolerates being held for only about thirty seconds But if patiently held more she should get more used to it.Taylor has lived with children but we strongly suggest older children who know to socialize her at night..when she will be easier to handle. Like all hamsters she prefers to sleep during the day and then shake it off at night She will need hamster safe chewing items and a yearly vet exam. She can live in a cage like this or an aquarium. Cages like this are better because it gives him bars to climb and the ventilation is better and healthier for him. A few hiding places and things to climb on will suit her just fine.Her new family should give her at least one night to settle in before the socializing starts. The easiest way to socialize a Hamster is to put your hand near them palms up and give them time to sniff and (hopefully) crawl onto it. This could take several days so patience is key. (With hamsters it s always better to go VERY slowly with them. Letting them get used to smells and sounds in a new environment will put them at ease.)A large cage equipped with a running wheel (enclosed not with holes) lots of clean fluffy bedding (Care Fresh) a few hiding places and a varied diet will keep her healthy and content. Hamsters live on average about 2-3 years. Hamsters can be great pets for children but because of their size parents should always be supervising when interaction is taking place.
