Joe - Treeing Walker Coonhound - male neutered - young (approx. 1 year of age) - 45 pounds (gaining weight - came into care very thin) - tricolor short coatThis magnificent guy is Joe the happiest and friendliest of dogs. Tall and lanky Joe is a very lovable hound. His feet are enormous and his ears are long and draping. Joe s appearance conjures up images of horses and dogs gloriously pounding across miles of countryside in frenzied chase however Joe is actually that kind of hound only in looks. In person Joe is very easy going a friend to all people and to all creatures great and small and truth be told - he is a bit goofy.Joe s kindness and congeniality may be the reason he was found in the countryside wounded starving and alone we must presume that he was an utter failure as a hunting dog. He is doing his best to gain weight in foster care where he is having a splendid time. Joe has discovered the immense joy of blankets and a soft bed since coming into care along with the wonderful sensation of being petted and held which he adores he loves to have the spot behind his ears scratched. Another of Joe s great discoveries is the world of toys. This is the only arena in which Joe seems to have any hunting instinct whatsoever and he finds toys pounces on them and carries them about contentedly for hours of blissful self-amusement.Joe s puppy-like curiosity and playfulness inspire laughter in his foster care providers and they report that it is this goofy side of Joe that they find the most touching In their care Joe has also learned two new cues sit and lie down . Joe is attentive although easily distracted and he is always responsive - happily waiting for some kind of direction. He is also well mannered in the house.Joe rides easily and quietly in the car and walks surprisingly well on a lead although he tends to pull a bit. We do not want to seem as if leash-walking is impossible for hounds but we do respect the extraordinary scenting powers of this breed and how this ability can drive their interests so when a hound is learning to be cooperative on lead we are always grateful.Joe has proven himself to interact well with other dogs and also children although we do not recommend him for a home with very small children due to his current clumsiness and enthusiasm. He plays with joyful abandon with the dog in his foster home who is also a hound. We do not recommend Joe for a home with cats.Joe will benefit from continuing positive encouragement and support. His adopter(s) should also be aware that by adopting Joe they are assuming responsibility for a dog who believes that the whole world is his friend - this is a wonderful and unexpected trait in a dog who was lost and starving and yet it makes him quite vulnerable. Joe has been blessed with an optimism and a disposition that is kind and responsive. Whatever hardships he endured including injuries and deprivation did not dampen his outlook nor diminish his capacity to expect only good.
