Finn - Male Plott Hound Mix

Finn - Plott Hound - male neutered - adult mature - 7 years best guess - 60 pounds - brown and black brindle with grey feet and muzzle - short coatFinn is that special blend of innocence and simple goodness that is a hound.Found in the woods on New Year s Day starving and cold Finn lumbered appreciatively into the truck that brought him to a rural Animal Control facility. He was so hungry and thin that he spent his first moments there rummaging through garbage cans for something to eat and food still scores very high on Finn s list of favorite things.Finn may not be a complicated dog but he is an exceptionally sweet one and if you have ever wondered what it is that people love about this breed he is every bit of that and more. Finn touched the hearts of all the humane workers in the facility to which he was taken and they put out special appeals to rescue groups seeking help for him. At the time he was found he seemed old and haggard to them and we have to say that Finn has probably had a fairly tough life. Although he is definitely a mature adult none of our vets has been certain that he is actually a senior dog and he seems to be gaining youth and vitality with each passing day. He is thriving on a basic protocol that we call love and groceries and he is blissfully learning what it can mean to be a dog who lives in a home where he is valued. We doubt that Finn had ever received any formal training before coming into care but his big heart and faithful outlook have guided him to understand almost intuitively what is being asked of him. Finn asks for very little and he has an uncanny ability to process the rhythms and expectations of a household. So when the cat swatted his big nose when Finn went to meet him Finn reckoned the best course of action from now on is always to walk around the cat. When offered a Kong on which to chew rather than the remote control Finn began to understand that he had his first true possession.Finn is a beautiful dog. Long-bodied and muscular he has extremely long ears and a lovely brindle coat. His eye contact is open soft direct and full - he is always waiting for a cue or often a morsel of food.Finn has truly blossomed in foster care and while he is no doubt very astonished at his change in circumstances he is navigating through it all with his characteristic spirit of kindness and accommodation. His foster mom reports that he knows no commands but listens attentively to figure out what you want of him. He has now learned sit and that out means we want him out of our personal space while we cook and eat. She also has reported on how gently and calmly and carefully he walks with her to the bus stop and kindly greets each of the children in turn. And how she loves that he soaks up every bit of attention that he is given.Finn is touchingly grateful and delighted by petting especially on his head and ears. He is what his foster mom calls a true snuggle bunny. In fact his love of being touched and hugged coupled with his discovery of the extraordinary wonder of soft places make him a perfects companion indoors and out. His greatest treasure in his foster home is the over-stuffed chair on which he is permitted to lounge. Having discovered the delight of being touched Finn has learned that he is lovable and his foster mom is moved most by the fact that he has had the courage to nuzzle her for petting.Undemanding Finn is content to be with his humans whatever the venue. He follows his foster mom around the house devotedly but unobtrusively relaxes like a pro on his dog bed or his special chair and is thrilled by the prospect of a long walk or turn out in the yard. He walks surprising well on lead although his considerable capacity to pick up a scent can cause him to pull otherwise he is happy to follow his human s lead and can trot along at quite a brisk pace.Finn rides well in a car and settles quietly and comfortably.Finn s adopter(s) will need to remember that Finn is on a huge trajectory of learning and they will need to continue the platform of teaching and positive reinforcement that his foster care providers have begun. He has now been fully vetted by Hedgesville Hounds and is in very good health. He has rewarded our own efforts and matched them with his intuitive understanding his honest nature and his good heart. He will reward his adopter(s) commitment and love with earnest effort trust and abject devotion.Finn would do best in a home with a securely fenced yard where he can wander trot and smell to his heart s delight but we will consider a home in which the adopters can make a commitment to taking him on long walks daily. If you are interested in any of our rescue animals please fill out our non-binding application to send a non-binding application...
