Scarlet MacawAra macaoNamed appropriately Rainbow is a gorgeous Scarlet macaw representing feather colors across the visible spectrum. Just like the special conditions required for a rainbow to be seen in nature this scarlet macaw thrives indoors and outdoors environments with socialization. Given the opportunity to express himself and feel the breeze of open air Rainbow is a delightful and curious individual. He came to The Gabriel Foundation in 2005 via Best Friends at the approximate age of 12-13 years after he d been a display bird at a Las Vegas hotel. Rainbow is now about 22 years old. Rainbow came to TGF in the belief that needed a more varied macaw environment than was available at that time and this has proven to be accurate. With the opportunity to spend many days outside in TGF s outdoor aviaries Rainbow is a healthy fully feathered macaw with a strong presence and sense of individuality. Upon first greeting he may seem intimidating with big gestures and behaviors one could label as aggressive but given time to learn grow and become familiar with him Rainbow is quite the interactive individual. A simple indoor cage is not enough for this bright individual time outside and interactions to stimulate his mind and physical activity bring him to life. The Scarlet macaw s natural distribution is primarily southern Mexico and Panama to tropical South America and eastern Bolivia. These near 1 kilogram birds are known to nest in large cavities within trees with beaks designed for destroying wood though they are known to prefer softer wooded tree species so their hollows can be modified. Influencing their immediate environment feeding up high in the canopy and keeping busy with their beak are part of a Scarlet macaw s natural behaviors. Though we cannot recreate that habitat in captivity to keep Rainbow healthy both physically and emotionally it s the human responsibility to provide him alternative ways to keep his life enriched and social.
