Tweety is one handsome brown tabby boy He s a bit overwhelmed right now by all the new sights and sounds of the shelter but will no doubt settle into a new home after a period of adjustment. Previously he lived with a single adult no dogs and one other cat. Here at the shelter he does not seem to be comfortable around dogs--hearing the sound of barking dogs sent him immediately into hiding. He has not lived with children in the past. In spite of his lack of experience around children and his shy nature he might accept the companionship of polite cat-savvy children aged 12 and above who will treat him gently and with respect. On the other hand he would no doubt thrive in a calm home with adults only who could give him the time he needs to become comfortable.Less confident cats like Tweety will adjust better to a new environment when given a small space to call their own for a period of time. In addition to all his kitty essentials you will want to provide him with a cozy cocoon-like bed basket or box which will give him a sense of security and comfort. Visit him often offering soft words of reassurance. Entice him to play--a wand teaser toy is a good way to engage him and bond with him. He favors petting on his shoulders and his back rather than the top of his head. His long coat will require regular grooming sessions which he enjoys if kept brief. He ll let you know when he has had enough.In his previous home he was an indoor only cat but had the luxury of a secure outdoor catio that allowed him to enjoy fresh air without the dangers of being outside. An alternative to a catio would be a cat tree or a shelf near a sunny window where he could observe outdoor activity. It may take some time for Tweety to gain the necessary confidence to explore the rest of the house. When he seems interested allow him to do so one room at a time. Always leave the way open for him to return to the comfort of his sanctuary.
