Housed in a private collection until now this piece has now been released for sale. This is an original 19th century Augusto Moriani watercolor which depicts a young peasant in a wide brimmed hat. The piece has not been removed from its frame for inspection but the apparent condition of the piece is fantastic especially considering that it is over a century old. It has been framed as shown the open frame portion measures 10.5 x 13.5 and the total framed measurement is 15.75 x 19.75. Much of his life he lived in Sorrento although it is not known if he was born or died there.One Italian source refers to Moriani as a Sorrentine watercolorist. He was not the first in Italy to produce a body of such portraits but almost certainly the first in Naples along with perhaps Edoardo Forlenza. Works are known dated from 1881 to 1903. Works in oil are known as well as a few landscapes of scenes around the Bay of Naples. Three public ecclesiastical commissions are known. In 1866 he painted the frescoe in the town hall of Afragola (a town near Naples) of the founding of Afragola in 1140. In 1886 he painted the oils depicting views of Afragola that hang in the meeting room of that town hall. And in 1902 together with Pietro Baroni he painted the frescoes of the patron saints of Sorrento in the eight panels of the cupola above the choir in the Cathedral of Sorrento. Paintings are generally signed A Moriani and infrequently simply Moriani .
