January 2016 UPDATE We now know thanks to an alert & insightful volunteer that Bell (who we thought was Reed s mate) is male Reed & Bell are brothers not mates and each was more frustrated than happy with the other so they were split up to find female doves to court and marry. Bell fell in love with Fava and they are now a mated pair and adopted too Reed is currently dating in the flock of doves fostered at Andy s in San Jose.Reed is a lovely Ringneck dove (pied coloration) that was originally surrendered to SFACC in August 2012 (along with 12 other doves) when his person was terminally ill (and we were too full to take them though we promised to look out for them as best we could). Reed and his mate bell were adopted from the shelter but then 2 years later brought back and re-surrendered. Reed was in OK condition but his mate Bell was in bad shape and they needed to be rescued and helped. We were still too full (we always are) but somehow we made room to fit them in. Reed is doing very well despite all the challenges he s faced. Because of Bell s vulnerability he has to stay next door to her (rather than share a cage) but he has adjusted and is a real gentleman about the whole situation. He s become more trusting of people and he LOVES to sunbathe. Our hope is that Bell will recover enough that they can resume their relationship and live together once again.
