DEFINITION Under the Director of Nutritional Services prepares and organizes daily food preparation leads the food service staff and oversees the operation of the cafeteria.QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain the knowledge skills and abilities required of this position would be through the completion of a high school diploma or its equivalent and three years of experience in the cooking preparation and serving of food to large numbers of people.KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Principles of supervision and leadership Proper methods of cooking and preparing large quantities of food Adjusting recipes to produce predetermined quantities of food Making substitutes of food items in accordance with menu planning techniques Standard liquid and dry measurements Standard safety practices and procedures related to the preparation and serving of food Sanitation laws and practices Use of standard kitchen equipment appliances and utensils Taking inventory and keeping records of inventory Estimating and ordering procedures Keeping records and reports Lifting moderately heavy containers of food or supplies Understanding and carrying out oral and written directionsESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here Acts as the in-charge food service assistant at a school site Organizes and leads the work of other food service assistants May coordinate activities for student helpers Trains and supervises student workers and adult substitutes with their food service responsibilities Operates a variety of equipment and appliances normally found in a large cafeteria Prepares and cooks items as needed for school lunches Serves and sells food may operate cash register Maintains records Estimates requisitions and stores needed food and supplies Receives and checks deliveries and stores food Maintains food service areas facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition Performs other related duties as requiredPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Neat personal appearance The ability to work effectively with students fellow employees and school officials The ability to meet the public tactfully and courteously.
