Overview Responsible for performing the preliminary diamond grading process on natural and synthetic diamonds submitted to the GIA Laboratory for Diamond Grading Services by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Works in a team production environment to perform the preliminary diamond grading process. Follows laboratory s grading methodology and procedures for locating identifying and documenting clarity characteristics treatments and other features present in the diamond. Assigns clarity polish and symmetry grades according to the laboratory s procedures in accordance with the GIA International Diamond Grading System. Verifies or determines various measurements and proportions according to laboratory procedures. Reads and implements procedural updates pertinent to his her job duties. Complies with GIA corporate and laboratory policies and procedures as well as statuary and regulatory mandates. Participates in the laboratory s Quality Management System through initiating corrective and preventative actions as appropriate and thereby contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory quality. May participate in the D to Z or colored diamond color grading process weights and measures processes instrument calibration and maintenance and special projects. Communicates effectively gets along with coworkers and management and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure. Other duties may be assigned. Technical Competencies (Knowledge Skills & Abilities) To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and or ability required. Basic computer skills and ability to work with a microscope. Adaptable to new processes and environments. Ability to get along with a diverse group of individuals in a team environment. Detail-oriented with good concentration skills. Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism. Drive and motivation to meet and exceed production requirements. Willingness to complete the GIA Graduate Diamonds Program within a specified timeframe is required. Graduate Gemologist diploma preferred. Education and Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Bachelor s degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university with major in Earth Sciences preferred and one to three months related experience and or training. Related work experience training or education preferred. Successful completion of the Preliminary Grader training process which includes hands-on individualized training incorporating GIA s policies procedures and established guidelines in the documentation of pertinent data for diamond grading services. Physical Requirements Work Environment (if applicable) The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit use hands to finger handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. This job is production-oriented and involves sitting for long periods of time evaluating diamonds under a microscope. In order to perform this job the employee must constantly grasp grip and or turn small objects (gems) with tweezers or a stoneholder and concurrently view and analyze the object using a microscope and loupe while intermittently and repetitively using a computer mouse to document grading information and plot characteristics on a computerized diagram which requires fine hand manipulation and motor skills for seven or more hours per day. Must periodically adjust the microscope. Requires fine hand manipulation and eye-to-hand coordination. Specific vision abilities include close vision color vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Occasional walking standing and lifting and or moving objects that weigh less than 5 lbs and infrequently may have to move objects up to 25 lbs.
