Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance music percussion songs self-defense technique and acrobatics. It developed as a result of slavery in Brazil and was born as an expression of resistance as well as a method of spiritual and emotional empowerment. Through music and song slaves were able to conceal the combative purpose of Capoeira. True to its historical roots Capoeira today is a means of empowerment for its practitioners and a form of social and cultural exchange. Capoeira Basica I Tuesdays at 7 30 p.m. This class session is for those that have never played Capoeira as well as those that practice Capoeira and desire to refresh its basics. Capoeira Basica focuses on the fundamental movements of Capoeira which includes different kicks escapes and acrobatic movements. This class is a full body workout which improves muscular and core strength flexibility aerobic conditioning agility and balance. Learn the fundamentals of Capoeira and the Brazilian culture through song music and movement. Capoeira Basica II Tuesdays at 8 00 p.m. This class session is a continuation of Capoeira Basica I with a focus on improving the Capoeira techniques as well as the fluidity of the movements. Students will learn to develop a conversation through their movements as they combine various kicks acrobatics and transitional movements. This class elevates its workout by adding partner training into the class format.
