I just purchased a bunch of Desert Ironwood from some new friends in AZ. This is some of the best quality and color wood he s seen And I m quickly falling deeply in love with this gorgeous and unusual American wood I want to sell some of it to help me pay for the portion I get to use (I m currently between grad school and my first job so I have essentially no money to buy wood -( I have whole logs down to pen blanks depending on what you re looking for. I also have some burl. -) Basic pricing is Wood 3 lb for logs or anything I can cut with a chainsaw in a few minutes. For anything more add on the shop time ( 40 hr) it takes to make whatever size you are wanting. Burl 5-7 lb (depending on quality) with the same add-on rates for shop time. A few things to note 1) The strong graining of Desert Ironwood looks FANTASTIC when bookmatched 2) Desert Ironwood is not like your average timber tree. There are many branchings and anything straight is uncommon. Plus the wood is often between 400 and 1200 years old so cracks and degraded decayed areas are quite common. Plus overgrowth is common for both bark and previous limbs. Thus average recovery of usable wood from a log is typically 1 part good to 3 or 4 waste and recovered pieces are often not large -- for me that s generally 24 or about 8 wide or 4 thick. 3) All the Desert Ironwood I have was taken from private lands where the trees were in iminent danger of being caught up in flash floods and thus causing extensive damage because the wood is heavier than water and is just about guaranted to cause a blockage often at roads bridges or worst of all railroad bridges. Thus these trees were cut after they showed signs of starting to wash out and before they actually got caught up in a flash flood. I thus put this wood within the realm of ethically harvested rather than wontonly harvested. Anyway all the pictures are of wood I have already taken from my logs.
