Assistant Director - Environmental Health Services

Evaluates and determines applicable requirements of state and federal regulations and or programs regulating the handling storage transportation and disposal of hazardous materials hazardous waste radioactive and biological waste. Develops implements and coordinates campus-wide programs designed to standardize control handling storage packaging transfer and disposal of hazardous surpluses and waste. Acts as the program manager for laboratory safety program. Ensures compliance according to the university lab safety manual. applicable state and federal mandates as well as best business practices. Supervises chemical hygiene officer and laboratory safety inspector. On-call for any environmental hazard (to include radioactive material and biological agents) emergency at all times. Due to communication expectations of the position the incumbent will be required to maintain cellular or other electronic communication device. Must be able to pass post-offer physical and annual physical thereafter. Must be able to pass respirator fit test and be able to work while wearing a respirator. Minimum qualifications Bachelor degree in chemistry or engineering environmental sciences related field and five years working knowledge of hazardous materials management laboratory safety involving environmental health practices applicable state and federal laws and standards regarding materials handling and research compliance in a university hospital municipal or research setting. Ability to communicate well with administrators faculty staff students and others both effectively and efficiently and in a professional manner. Ability to analyze complex problems and develop practical cost-effective solutions. Ability to understand and interpret complex state and federal laws and regulations. Proficiency in the operation of sophisticated analyzing equipment and in the interpretation of obtained results. Ability to operate calmly under emergency and stressful conditions.
