Legal Services of Southern Missouri (LSSM) is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income persons. LSSM seeks a paralegal to provide administrative and legal support to the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) program in Springfield MO. The Medical-Legal Partnership program brings together physicians nurses social workers attorneys and paralegals to address non-medical problems that may affect health including substandard housing conditions domestic violence food income and housing insecurity improper denials of Medicaid and other public benefits and failure to provide children with the educational services to which they are entitled. With training the paralegal will work under attorney supervision to interview LSSM applicants and clients interact with health care professionals at the MLP hospital maintain records in LSSM s case management system participate in community education events and work as part of a legal team including gathering and synthesizing documents conducting research drafting correspondence and documents and providing other litigation support for LSSM clients. Applicants must have excellent communication analytic organizational and computer skills. Must have proven ability to learn quickly work effectively both independently and as part of a team and must relate well to low-income people with diverse backgrounds. Additional qualifications that are preferred or considered as a plus prior paralegal experience certification and or training prior casework or social work experience prior experience working with low- income clients patients or customers.
