This is a long-term contract that will start after a successful background check is completed. We are currently seeking an Advanced Life Support Technician for employment at McDonald Hospital Fort Eustis VA. (Full-Time) EMPLOYEE QUALIFICATIONS Must maintain National Registry Medical Technician certification. Must maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support C-Health Care Provider CPR. Certifications must be issued from American Heart Association. Must have documentation of completed Emergency Vehicle Operation Training Be a U.S. Citizen (certified copy of birth certificate or naturalization papers). Must be skilled in emergency medicine techniques based on the diagnosis of the patient the approach or combination of approaches that will most effectively sustain the patient s life. Must have skill and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and or traffic conditions in providing emergency and patient transport.ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Airway Obstruction and Respiratory Arrest. Based on the patient s condition opens and maintains the airway (using the head-tilt maneuver jaw thrust maneuver face down modified jaw thrust maneuver and esophageal obturator airway technique). Performs pulmonary resuscitation if breathing fails to start spontaneously upon opening the airway using such techniques as mouth-to mouth mouth-to-nose etc. Cardiac Arrest. Provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with AHA standards varying the approach for small children infants. Mechanical Breathing Aids. Determines the need and equipment to provide appropriate life support e.g. oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways suction nasal cannula etc. Bleeding and Shock. Accurately determines blood pressure readings which are used in conjunction with a variety of symptoms to identify the nature of shock. Wounds. Recognizes and determines the causes and basic medical implications of closed and open soft tissue wounds and treats appropriately. Applies appropriate bandages. Fractures of Torso and Extremities. Recognizes fractures dislocations and sprains. Determines the proper method and takes steps to immobilize the patient for transport by using pneumatic counter pressure devices and applying traction based on the nature of the fracture of dislocation. Head Face Neck and Spine Injuries. Identifies when possible the symptoms of potential life threatening dangers and provides appropriate immobilization for injuries. Eye Chest Abdomen and Genitalia. Treats a variety of eye injuries i.e. impaled objects chemical heat and light burns etc. recognizes and treats chest trauma lung collapse symptoms caused by various chest intrusions. Recognizes treats and immobilizes for transport injuries to the abdomen and genitalia by preventing shock monitoring evaluating vital signs controlling bleeding etc. Child Birth. Responds to pre-delivery complications e.g. convulsions hemorrhaging as well as to normal deliveries. Miscellaneous Medical Emergencies. Recognizes stabilizes and treats a wide variety of medical emergencies e.g. poison ingestion or inhalation bites stings pediatric patients heart attacks strokes etc. employs communicable disease control and containment measures. Employs Basic Life Support (BLS) and or ALS and various mechanical aids for resuscitation. Environmental Emergencies. Initiates treatment for heat electrical radiation burns and heat exhaustion stroke etc. Extrication and Packaging of Victims. Uses a variety of light rescue tools and equipment for removal of victims patients. Pharmacology. When treatment of an injury or illness requires the administration of drugs verifies the medication with the physician (over the radio) calculates the dosage required of the medications permitted to be administers by a Basic Emergency Medical Technician and administers the drug. There are times when the technician cannot contact the physician before administering drugs for instance radio malfunction or acute condition of patient. In such instances the technician takes a patient history and administers the medication in accordance with established guidelines. If this occurs the technician assures reasons for actions taken are properly documented and filed in a timely manner with the supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned - Uphold established patient care and practice standards - Review and submit reports as required - May be assigned to other clinics in the MCAHC footprint on a temporary basis as needed or for additional on the job training.
