Assistant Director Environmental Health and Safety

Under the direction of the Director of EHS provides professional expertise in the operation of Environmental Health and Safety programs to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements national consensus standards and OSU safety policies and procedures. This position is the program manager for the laboratory and research safety program. Ensures compliance according to the university lab safety manual applicable state and federal mandates as well as best business practices. Manage programs to include blood-borne pathogens respiratory protection IAQ mold ergonomics and occupational health. Due to communication expectations of the position the employee will be required to carry a department-issued cell phone. Minimum qualifications Bachelor s degree in Chemistry or Engineering Environmental Sciences related field. Five years working knowledge of chemical hygiene laboratory safety involving environmental health practices applicable state and federal laws and standards regarding materials handling and research compliance in a university hospital municipal or research setting. Valid Driver s License. CPR First Aid AED certification within six months. 24-hour HAZWOPER certification within six months. Ability to communicate well with administrators faculty staff students and others effectively efficiently and in a professional manner. Proficient in technical writing and written communication. Able to analyze complex problems and develop practical cost-effective solutions. Able to understand and interpret complex state and federal laws and regulations. Proficient in the operation of sophisticated analyzing equipment and in the interpretation of obtained results. Able to operate calmly under emergency and stressful conditions. Must pass post-offer physical and annually thereafter. Must be able to pass respiratory fit test be able to work while wearing a respirator and comply with OSHA requirements. Regular exposure to physically demanding and hazardous tasks including walking for long periods of time bending stopping lifting standing reaching and climbing stairs ladders. Must be able to lift in excess of 30 pounds. Preferred qualifications Master s degree in Chemistry or Engineering Environmental Sciences related field. Seven years working knowledge of chemical hygiene laboratory safety involving environmental health practices applicable state and federal laws and standards regarding materials handling and research compliance in a university hospital municipal or research setting. Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). 24-hour HAZWOPER certification.
