The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture invites applicants for an Assistant Professor in Pecan and Fruit Production Physiology. This is an eleven-month tenure track 75% research and 25% teaching position in the Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department. Preferred start date is August 2018. This position is endowed by the J.D. Scotty Scott Professorship. Program Description Pecan and fruit research is conducted within the framework of the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) and the teaching program is part of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). Both the OAES and CASNR are in OSU s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department (HLA) offers B.S. degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Management and a BLA degree in Landscape Architecture. The HLA graduate program offers a M.S. degree in Horticulture. Ph.D. students advised by a HLA faculty member matriculate through the Crop Science program or interdisciplinary Plant Science Environmental Science or Food Science programs. Duties & Responsibilities The successful candidate will conduct scholarly research to support Oklahoma s pecan and fruit industry. The incumbent is expected to develop a nationally recognized program of research excellence and to actively participate as a member of the multidisciplinary pecan and horticulture food crops teams. Publishing refereed articles securing extramural funding from public and private sources and interacting with the State s industry are required. Participation in departmental public service efforts and collaboration with other institutions and state and national agencies is expected. Developing and sustaining a positive relationship with Oklahoma s pecan industry is required. The incumbent s research should focus on sustainable economically viable pecan and fruit management systems for Oklahoma and the U.S. Potential emphasis areas could include but are not limited to developing and improving sustainable management practices drought and temperature (hot and cold) tolerance fertility management mitigation of pesticide and nutrient runoff weed management as well as development of products and technologies useful in pecan and fruit management systems. The incumbent will contribute to both the undergraduate and graduate curricula in HLA. Courses will include an undergraduate course covering Fruit and Nut Production will be taught in alternate years. Other new and or existing courses will be identified to reflect departmental needs and the incumbent s expertise. The faculty member will actively participate in graduate education by recruiting and advising graduate students serving on graduate committees and supervising thesis and dissertation efforts. Additional responsibilities include academic advising for undergraduate students student recruiting and perhaps student club advising. Embedded in CASNR s philosophy is a strong commitment to teaching mentoring and building student leadership skills. Required Ph.D. Ed.D. in Horticulture or a related field. Degree should have an emphasis on fruits or nuts. Applicant should have a passion for scholarly research classroom teaching and student mentoring an appreciation for teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration and excellent interpersonal communication and computer skills. Preferred Previous involvement with the pecan fruit or nut industry and experience in teaching are considered beneficial.
