Athena is an Amazon service that provides an interactive query service. Athena allows users to directly analyze data stored in Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) using standard SQL. With a few mouse clicks, Athena can be made to point to the location where data is stored in Amazon S3 in the Amazon Management Console. Following that, SQL can be used to run ad hoc queries, which will return results to the user in a matter of seconds. Athena is a server less service, which means that the user does not have to worry about managing or configuring the infrastructure. Because Athena has the ability to scale automatically, it can execute multiple queries in parallel, yielding results quickly even when datasets are large and complex queries must be executed.
