Describe PEP PEP, sometimes known as PEPSE, is a cocktail of HIV medications that can prevent the infection from taking root. If you were in danger of transmitting HIV during the incident, you can use it afterwards. PEP must be consumed within 72 hours (three days) in order to be effective; ideally, it should be consumed within 24 hours. PEP is not a morning after pill for HIV and it cannot be relied upon to be effective. It is intended to be used in an emergency situation as a last resort, such as when a condom fails during sexual activity. You won t be shielded from other STDs or an unforeseen pregnancy by taking PEP. Ways to use PEP PEP must be taken for 28 days exactly as directed. ? Avoid skipping doses or failing to finish the entire month as doing so decreases the likelihood that it will work. ? If you miss a dose, do not take a duplicate dose. ? If you forget to take a dose and it has been less than 24 hours since you last did, take the following dose right away. ? PEP will be stopped if you miss more than 48 hours of it.
