Create detailed instructions for others to follow. As a result they must be detailed and precise at every step so that the instructions can be useful Understand and then explain highly technical information. Background in engineering or computer science in order to do this. Excellent writing skills to be able to explain technical information clearly. Technical Writer duties Responsible for creating and writing various types of user documentation including how-to guides references manuals cheat sheets or instructions. Meet with subject matter experts to establish business process specifications. Create user documentation for a variety of material including how-to guides and instruction manuals flow charts and RACI Charts Prepare charts graphs or forms to go along with rough drafts. Document clear and concise policies and procedures Submit copies to managers for feedback. Adjust copy as necessary and proofread for grammar and spelling. Release the document following final approval. Plan develop organize write and edit operational procedures and manuals Research develop and document technical design specifications and test scripts Produce electronic documentation in addition to hard copy manuals Maintain a comprehensive library of technical terminology and documentation
