This bulletin will review the principles of alternating voltage current and power before providing details of single and three phase power.Electrical TerminologyVOLT (V) Voltage is the electrical pressure or force that causes current flow in a circuitAMP (A) Ampere is a rate of flow measurement f the current in a circuitPOWER (P) Power is the rate of doing work or the rate of expending energy. The unit of electrical power is the Watt expressed W VAWATT (W) Watt is the measurement of the electric power produced by a generator or consumed by a load. The work performed by the load is measured in watts.HERTZ (hz) The frequency of the number of complete cycles per second. There are two reversals of voltage and current in each cycle. Standard power line frequency domestically is 60 hertz and internationally is 50 hertz.PHASE Refers to a specific waveform of voltage or current. If voltage or current from two sources reach their positive peaks at the same time they are said to be in-phase . If two voltages peak at different times they are said to be out-of-phase . This term also is used to describe the voltage or current source as in single phase power or three phase power.POWER FACTOR (PF) Power Factor is the ratio of actual power delivered to a load measured in watts (w) to the apparent power expressed in volt-amperes (VA). The apparent power is calculated as the product of volts x amperes and is expressed as a decimal or percentage.
